Saltwater Fishing
There are a number of different saltwater fishing opportunities available, from saltwater fly-fishing, rock and surf, as well as deep-sea game fishing. Fishing trips can be arranged with professionally operated charter companies or you can even hire a professional fishing guide for the day.
The most popular and well-known fishing sites are found along the east coast of South Africa. This coastline is noted for its big game fishing and large billfish. The colder waters of the Cape are better known for their various species of Tuna and Snoek.
Some of the more popular fish caught along our coastline are:
Billfish - South Africa is world renown for the Black Marlin that have been caught off its shores. Recently (November 2000) the new world record Black Marlin was caught at Sodwana Bay. Blue Marlin, Stripped Marlin and Sailfish are caught off our coastline. The best time for Marlin fishing is from October to May and for Sailfish the ideal time is from September to July.
Gamefish - All species of game fish can be caught throughout the year e.g. Barracuda, Couta (King Mackerel), Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Kingfish, Kapkaap (Jobfish), and numerous other species.
Sharks - Pit your strength and skills against the predators of the sea. You will find Hammerheads, Zambezi, Ragged-tooth, Blacktip, Macrko and many more sharks. Sharks can be caught year round. Great White sharks are specially protected in South Africa and cannot be killed. Cage dives can be arranged for those who wish to encounter these much-feared creatures in their natural environment.
Broadbill - Sodwana is only the second place in South Africa where Broadbill Swordfish are found. These fish are caught at night over the full moon and only when the conditions are perfect.
